Union Statement

The A. Ray Olpin Student Union takes pride in engaging with global events that provide a sense of community to our campus. We are excited to host an event that celebrates our campus’s diverse communities, countries, and cultures but in that, we must acknowledge the human rights violations related to the World Cup in Qatar.

We recognize the reports of human rights violations that have taken place in Qatar in connection with the construction of facilities like hotels, stadiums, and transportation for the World Cup 2022. According to the Human Rights Watch, around 6,500 foreign worker deaths have occurred throughout the construction of various facilities around Qatar since 2010. These workers come from multiple countries, including: Uganda, Kenya, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, and the Philippines. Numerous reports have also been made of foreign workers’ rights being violated, including confiscated passports, wage exploitation, poor living conditions, and dangerous working conditions.

We encourage you to visit the links below. They connect with different organizations that are speaking on these human rights violations and ways to support the communities that have been affected.
