Union Scholarships Are Now Open!

Union Scholarships for the 2025-2026 academic year are now open! We will be accepting applications from December 16th, 2024 – February 16th, 2025.

Please click on each individual scholarship to see if it is open for applications. This list will be updated as more scholarships become available. Please be sure to check back for more scholarship opportunities.

Steps for Applying to Union Scholarships
Visit AcademicWorks, click on Sign In and log in via your CIS account, and complete the general application. Once completed and submitted, click on the scholarship links to view specific Union Scholarships.

Available Scholarships

  • The Union Scholarship Fund, in partnership with Dining Services, provides one (1) $3,000 each to assist a Dining Services student employee in accomplishing their academic goals. The purpose is to identify and recognize student leaders whose involvement has, or will contribute to the overall mission of Dining Services and the University Union.  This includes students who are or will be associated with the different leadership opportunities within Dining Services or the University Union. These opportunities can include but are not limited to involvement with an office or event(s) in the Union.

  • The Dream Center at the University of Utah, in partnership with the Union Administration Office, is pleased to announce one (1) scholarship of $3,000 each to assist undergraduate and graduate students in accomplishing their academic goals.

    The purpose of this scholarship is to identify and recognize incoming and current University of Utah students whose community engagement and service have, or will contribute to the overall mission of the Dream Center (dream.utah.edu) and the A. Ray Olpin Union (union.utah.edu). This includes students who (1) engage in specialized college outreach and access strategies, (2) provide individualized mentoring for current and future University of Utah undocumented students, (3) promote campus-wide advocacy and/or trainings for University of Utah students, faculty, staff and administration, and (4) increase community-wide awareness of policies affecting current and future University of Utah undocumented students. These opportunities can include but are not limited to involvement with Dream Center events or the community at large.

  • The Union Scholarship Fund, in partnership with the Feed U Pantry and Union Programming Council, will provide one $3,000 scholarship to assist a student in accomplishing their academic goals. The purpose is to identify and recognize a student whose community engagement and service have or will, contribute to the mission of the Union and focus on food insecurity issues.

    The Union Scholarship committee defines community engagement as the process of working collaboratively with community groups and individuals to address issues that impact the well-being of those groups. For purposes of this scholarship and application, we also have a broad interpretation of the definition of community to include the University of Utah, the Salt Lake City area, and/or your own neighborhood.

  • The Hamza Yaqoobi First Generation Union Scholarship provides three (3) scholarships of $2,000 to first-generation college students pursuing an undergraduate degree </strong>. The scholarship aims to identify and recognize first-generation students whose commitment to creating community has or will contribute to the culture, values, and overall mission of the Union and the surrounding Utah community. This includes students building and strengthening their community within the Union, University of Utah campus community, and the Utah community.

    This scholarship defines first-generation as a student whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year college degree in the United States. This scholarship views commitment to creating and strengthening community as the process of working collaboratively with community groups and individuals on and off campus to address issues that impact community well-being.

  • María Isabel Reyes was a Graduate Assistant in the Union Administration Office at the A. Ray Olpin University Union. As a first-generation Latina transfer student, María worked tirelessly to create a campus community where everyone felt they belonged. María tragically lost her life to cancer in August 2017; however, during her short time at the University of Utah, her impact on the campus community and the Union was immense. María felt passionate about identifying best practices for supporting all underrepresented students in the Union.

    The Union acknowledges and recognizes transfer students within our campus community for their dedication and commitment to creating an environment where everyone feels like they belong and can thrive. The María Isabel Reyes Memorial Transfer Scholarship provides two (2) scholarships of $3,000 to assist a transfer student in accomplishing their academic goals. The purpose of this scholarship is to identify and recognize a transfer student who is committed to creating a campus community for all and who has, or will, contribute to the culture, values, and overall mission of the Union. These opportunities can include but are not limited to involvement within an office or event(s) in the Union.

  • The Center for Native Excellence and Tribal Engagement & Union Student Leader Scholarship provides two (2) scholarships of $2,000 to assist students in accomplishing their academic goals. The purpose is to identify and recognize students whose commitment to creating a welcoming campus community has or will contribute to the overall mission of the Center for Native Excellence and Tribal Engagement and the A. Ray Olpin Union.

  • The Whit Hollis Champions of the LGBTQIA+ Community Scholarship provides one scholarship of $3,000 to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student enrolled or planning to enroll at the University of Utah who advocates for the LGBTQIA+ community and who demonstrates a need for funds to meet their necessary college expenses through the financial circumstances essay.

    The scholarship committee defines LGBTQIA+ as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, Asexual/aromantic, or Ally. Additionally, the scholarship committee defines a champion as the ability to inspire others and make positive change around them to advance the interests of LGBTQIA+ people, especially in our compass community. Champions demonstrate self-knowledge, role modeling, integrity, decision-making ability, conflict resolution skills, and vision.

  • The Future Alumni Scholarship provides five (5) scholarships of $5,000 each to students near completion of their undergraduate and graduate degrees to reduce loans and assist with unmet financial needs. The purpose of this scholarship is to identify students near completion of their degree but who need financial support to become alumni of the University of Utah. This scholarship is for students who may have considered dropping out of school due to unmet financial need. Additionally, this scholarship is intended for students whose involvement has or will contribute to the overall well-being of the University of Utah campus community and will continue to do so after becoming part of the University of Utah alumni.

The purpose is to identify and recognize student leaders whose involvement has or will contribute to the overall mission of the Union. This includes students who are or will be associated with the different leadership opportunities within the Union. These opportunities can include but are not limited to involvement with an office or event(s) in the Union.

    The Union Student Leader Scholarship Committee defines leadership as the ability to communicate and embody a vision so that others commit to fulfilling the mission and goals of the University of Utah and the University Union. Leaders demonstrate self-knowledge, role modeling, integrity, decision-making ability, conflict resolution skills, and vision (adapted from the Association of College Unions International). In addition, leadership is not always defined by holding a formal position.
